Regarding the commentary's "First teaching them to recognize taking birth, causing them to abandon crooked views": Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] 21 explains: "If one sees the Tathāgata as truly being born in a royal palace, marrying a consort and fathering a son, passing into extinction in the twin śāla grove, and so forth, these are the crooked views of the two vehicles." Regarding the commentary's "Thus we know that birth by the Buddha's transformation is not a birth from perishing": this is from the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, the chapter on "Contemplating Sentient Beings": "Śāriputra asked the goddess, 'Perishing here, where will you be born?' The goddess said, 'Where birth occurs through the Buddha's transformation, I am born like that.' He said, 'Birth through the Buddha's transformation is not a birth that arises from perishing.' The goddess said, 'Sentient beings are likewise; it is not a birth from perishing.'"
