Regarding the commentary's "First, generating bodhicitta serves as the basis for repentance": repentance relying on bodhicitta is genuine repentance; repentance without generating bodhicitta is not genuine goodness. Thus the fifty-eighth fascicle of the sūtra says: "Forgetting bodhicitta while cultivating good roots is the work of Māra." From "Because it is the root of practice" onward, it resolves the objection regarding the lack of sequence, the meaning of which is as stated before.
