Regarding the Commentary's statement that 'Pūrṇa fully translates as Son of Compassion': the Sanskrit is Maitrāyaṇīputra. 'Fulfiller of Wishes' (Pūrṇa) was his father's name. His father prayed to Brahmā by the riverbank seeking a son, just when the river was full. Furthermore, he dreamt that a vessel of the seven treasures filled with jewels entered the mother's womb, whereupon the mother conceived the son; the father's wish was fulfilled, and he was named after this. The mother's name was Maitrāyaṇī, which translates here as 'Compassionate Practice'. It is also said that among the four Vedas there is a chapter by this name; his mother recited it, and she was named after it. The suffix -nī indicates the feminine gender. Naming the son after the mother, he was called 'Son of Compassion'. The Ekottarika[-āgama] states: 'Foremost among those who are skilled in extensively explaining and distinguishing the meanings is Maitrāyaṇīputra.'
