Regarding the commentary's "Endowed with these four meanings, it is called the Unsurpassed Jewel, retaining the Sanskrit phonetics": because it retains the Sanskrit phonetics, the title of the sūtra is *Laṅkāvatāra-ratna-sūtra*. *A* means 'un-', *vatāra* means 'surpassed jewel'; these are the words of this land. Furthermore, *tārā* also has the meaning of 'jewel,' so the translator retained both. *Laṅkā* precisely has the meaning of 'difficult of access.' Of the above four meanings, the first two are the unsurpassed jewel, and the latter two clarify 'difficult of access,' because it is the dwelling place of the lofty and eminent king of Laṅkā, and for those who have attained supernormal powers it is not difficult of access. Regarding the commentary's "signifying that in this abode, one contemplates all dharmas as like empty space, having no locus": that [sūtra] fully states, 'This bodhisattva contemplates all dharmas through ten kinds of practice, namely: 1. contemplating all dharmas as impermanent, 2. all dharmas as suffering, 3. empty, 4. non-self, 5. uncreated, 6. tasteless, 7. not corresponding to names, 8. having no locus, 9. free from conceptual discrimination, and 10. without solidity.' Explanation: All contain the words 'all dharmas.' Now it only cites clauses three and eight to accord with dwelling in emptiness; however, the remaining eight are also the meaning of emptiness.
