In the commentary, from "In terms of phenomena, then within it..." onward: first, [Chengguan] explains the vastness. From "There are many..." onward, he explains Vairocana. From "Asaṃkhyeya..." onward, he explains the adornments. From "Vast upper-storied pavilion..." onward, he explains the storehouse. In the commentary, "Fully pronounced, it is Midili": the Record of the Western Regions also translates it as "Meidalī"; these are simply variations in light and heavy Sanskrit pronunciation. "Yet there are three conditions": these three arise mutually from one another. That is, because he encountered the Maitreya Tathāgata, he attained the samādhi of a mind of loving-kindness. Because he attained this samādhi, his mother was also loving. "Loving-kindness abides dependent on wisdom": because the upper-storied pavilion was previously taken as the two wisdoms. In the commentary, "In each phrase, four things can be known": these four are also the four proximate causes and conditions of nirvāṇa; having been repeatedly explained before, it is therefore said that they "can be known". The first two phrases are approaching a good spiritual friend; the third phrase is hearing the true Dharma; the fourth phrase is practicing according to the teachings. Because proper mindfulness and reflection pervade all four phrases, each phrase causes one to give rise to such thoughts. Alternatively, the fourth phrase may be combined with proper mindfulness and reflection. Furthermore, the first phrase refers to the person endowed with all four, and the remaining three can be known. The second mark is concluded.
