Sixteenth: The Reason for Speaking of Ten. Question: In the various sūtras, the characteristics of dharmas follow the meaning: three bodies, four wisdoms, five eyes, six supernormal knowledges—varying by decrease and increase, they cannot be standardized. Why does this teaching mostly speak of ten? Answer: The true principle is perfectly interfused, and without characteristics it is not revealed; desiring to display the complete and wondrous, it is therefore expressed by relying on ten. Ten is the completion of a full cycle of numbers; more would be difficult to exhaust, and fewer would not reveal completeness. Moreover, speaking exhaustively of principle, the ten directions are fully complete; thus the five eyes are opened into ten eyes, and the three bodies are fully explained as ten bodies. Desiring that whatever meets the eye be perfectly interfused and that each and every one enters the dharmadhātu, it therefore mostly speaks of ten; this can be known from this. Respectfully answered.
