Twenty-sixth: Determining the Reason for the Mysteries. Question: Phenomena and principle are widely separated, and the one and the many are not the same; how can they interpenetrate layer upon layer without hindrance? Answer: Because the causes are broad and difficult to measure, I will briefly set forth one or two: First, because dharmas have no fixed nature: since the one is not fixedly one, it can be identical to the many; since the many are not fixedly many, they can be identical to the one. A sūtra says: 'The Vajra-surrounding mountains, limitless in number, / Can all be placed on the tip of a single hair; / Wishing to know that the supreme great has the mark of the small, / The bodhisattva thereby first generates the mind.' Second, because the Dharma-nature is interfusing and penetrating: that is, if one considers only phenomena, they mutually obstruct each other and cannot be identical or enter; if one considers only principle, there is nothing that can be identical or enter. Now, when a single phenomenon that is not different from principle completely subsumes the nature of principle, it causes those many phenomena that are not different from principle, according with the principle they rely upon, to all appear within the one. If a single phenomenon did not completely subsume principle, there would be the fault of principle having limits; if a single phenomenon completely subsumed principle yet the many phenomena did not appear along with it, there would be the fault of phenomena lying outside of principle. Now, since a single phenomenon completely subsumes principle, how could the many phenomena not appear within the one? Therefore a sūtra says: 'The inexhaustible ocean of all Dharma gates / Meets together within the bodhimaṇḍa of a single dharma,' and so on. Respectfully answered.
