問曰：此位初首而有十信，謂信、進、念、慧、定、施、戒、護、願、回向，計心四十，何故但言三十心耶？答曰：即十住中初住離出，以初發心而甚難故，故離出也。設有聖教言四十心，當知即據總別說也。理實三十，如四善根十回向中第十離出，謂法界無量回向也。

Question: At the very beginning of this rank there are the ten faiths, namely faith, vigor, mindfulness, wisdom, concentration, giving, morality, protection, vow, and dedication of merit, counting forty minds; why is it only said that there are thirty minds? Answer: They are isolated and extracted from the first abode among the ten abodes; because the initial arousal of the mind is extremely difficult, they are thus isolated and extracted. If there are sacred teachings that speak of forty minds, one should know that this is said based on the general and specific. In actual principle there are thirty, just as the four roots of goodness are extracted from the tenth among the ten dedications of merit, namely the immeasurable dedication of merit of entering the dharmadhātu.
