Question: In some sacred teachings, ten stages such as the stage of dry wisdom are spoken of; what distinction is there between them and these ten stages? Answer: The ten such as dry wisdom are shared practices of the three vehicles; these ten stages here are practiced exclusively by bodhisattvas; this is the distinction. What are the ten? First, the stage of dry wisdom, meaning the rank prior to heat; second, the stage of nature, meaning the rank of heat and so forth; third, the stage of the eight persons, meaning the fifteen minds of the path of seeing; fourth, the stage of seeing, meaning the sixteenth mind; fifth, the stage of attenuation, meaning the sakṛdāgāmin; sixth, the stage of freedom from desire, meaning the anāgāmin; seventh, the stage of what has been accomplished, meaning the fruit of the non-learner (aśaikṣa); eighth, the stage of the solitary realizer (pratyekabuddha); ninth, the stage of the bodhisattva; tenth, the stage of the Tathāgata.
