Question: When the above ten gates are fused by the six characteristics, what is the meaning? Answer: All ten phrases have the six characteristics, and therefore can be completely fused. The characteristics are of six kinds: first, the universal characteristic; second, the particular characteristic; third, the common characteristic; fourth, the distinctive characteristic; fifth, the integrative characteristic; sixth, the disintegrative characteristic. In the first single gate, there is no gate that is not subsumed; hence it is called the universal characteristic. The latter nine gates open nine from the one; hence they are called the particular characteristics. The ten gates assist each other without conflicting, together forming a single universal; hence they are called the common characteristic. Looking across the ten gates, their meanings are distinct from each other; hence they are called the distinctive characteristic. Gathering the nine to form the one, the one gate is complete; hence it is called the integrative characteristic. Dividing the one to make nine, outside of the nine there is no one; hence it is called the disintegrative characteristic.
