Question: What is the reason and meaning for establishing the above ten gates? Answer: Within the above ten gates, there are ten meanings in each: first, persons and dharmas; second, doctrinal teachings; third, cause and effect; fourth, principle and phenomena; fifth, understanding and practice; sixth, delimited realms and stages; seventh, teachers and disciples, dharmas and wisdom; eighth, primary and attendant, recompensed environment and primary body; ninth, adverse and agreeable, essence and function; tenth, manifestation in accordance with the faculties and desires of sentient beings. These ten meanings all simultaneously correspond to form a single pratītyasamutpāda; therefore, there is the gate of simultaneous complete correspondence. The above meanings, according to the power of pratītyasamutpāda, are layer upon layer without end; therefore, there is the gate of the realm of Indra's net. The existence and non-existence of pratītyasamutpāda in the above meanings are each not different; therefore, there is the gate of secret concealment and manifestation both accomplished. In the gate of identical essence, the above meanings have completely subsumed dharmas; therefore, there is the gate of fine subtle mutual containment and co-establishment. The above meanings each divide into the three times; therefore, there is the gate of distinct accomplishment of dharmas separated across the ten times. The essence and function of the above meanings are each separate yet still have the pure and the mixed; therefore, there is the gate of possessing virtues through pure and mixed faculties. The above meanings are entirely empowered and entirely unempowered; therefore, there is the gate of mutual containment of one and many without confusion. The above meanings each have the aspects of emptiness and existence; therefore, there is the gate of sovereign mutual identity of all dharmas. The above meanings are the self-nature of pratītyasamutpāda; therefore, there is the gate of adept accomplishment turning according to mind. The above meanings are each understood based on phenomena; therefore, there is the gate of manifesting dharmas and generating understanding based on phenomena.
