Eighth, the difference in the lands inhabited upon the dragon girl’s attainment of Buddhahood: That is, it is said to be the Spotless World in the south, not this Sahā world. The explanation says: The mind attains conformity with the real, hence it is called 'spotless.' Correctly according with original enlightenment, it is therefore termed 'the south,' because the north-south [axis] is upright. Moreover, the south represents clarity and emptiness; south is the Li [trigram], and Li is empty within. According to the method of the Li trigram among the eight trigrams, because mind upon mind is empty and without [substance], it is thereby represented relying on the worldly eight trigrams. Although the other directions lack the names of the eight trigrams, their directional principle is of a single principle. Therefore, although the principle is indeed as such, because wherever there is principle there are phenomena, there must still be a land as that upon which the multitude relies. If she separately dwells in the south, self and other, this and that, are still separated; this is still according with the three vehicles, discriminatively leading those of provisional capacity to generate faith and understanding, making concessions toward the Buddha Vehicle. Therefore, because the residual attachments and momentum of the three vehicles are difficult to break, though they have a portion of mind turned [to the truth], the conceptualization of self and other has not yet been cut off. This is unlike the Avataṃsaka's sudden imprinting of the essence of the dharmadhātu, where self and other thoroughly penetrate each other, and within every single minute dust mote one dwells in the portal of Indra's net. Therefore, it is now said that there is a difference in the lands inhabited.
