16.31

答曰：為四天在妙峯山半傍住，非是可表昇法頂至相盡處現智慧莊嚴住不退故。善財童子於妙峯山得憶念諸佛智慧光明門，同此位故，准例可知。以超情塵之跡，以山表之，非要蹬山也。以入如來智慧，於眾中堪為主導故，非要帝釋也。

Answer: Because the Four Heavenly Kings dwell halfway up Mount Sugopita on its sides, which cannot express ascending to the peak of the Dharma, reaching the point where marks are exhausted, manifesting the adornment of wisdom, and abiding in non-retrogression. The youth Sudhana obtained the gate of the radiant light of wisdom of mindfulness of all Buddhas at Mount Sugopita, which is identical to this stage, so this can be understood by analogy. Because it transcends the traces of emotional defilements, it is expressed through the mountain; it is not necessary to actually climb a mountain. Because one enters the Tathāgata's wisdom and is capable of serving as a sovereign leader among the assembly, it is not necessary to be [the literal] Śakra.
