Third, explaining how Sudhana symbolizes the Dharma: in this stage Sudhana meets the night goddess named Sarvanagararakṣāsaṃbhavatejaḥ (Guardian of All Cities Who Increases Dignity and Power). In the assembly of the Tathāgata at the bodhimaṇḍa, she sits upon a lion seat of king-of-jewels maṇi, surrounded by countless night spirits. She manifests physical forms reflecting all sentient beings, manifests forms that universally encounter all sentient beings, and so forth, having attained the liberation of profound, sovereign, wondrous sound. She is called 'Guardian of All Cities Who Increases Dignity and Power.' The sūtra says: 'Good man! Amidst sentient beings slumbering in the dark night of ignorance within birth-and-death, I alone awaken, causing all sentient beings to guard the citadel of their minds, renounce the three realms, and abide in the supreme Dharma-citadel of all-knowledge.' This shows that this sixth ground is the Dharma approach to be cultivated, and this night-ruling spirit is the practice of the ground carried out on this sixth ground. Fearing that practitioners might not understand the matter, both the Dharma and the practice are used to symbolize it. Her dwelling in the assembly of the Buddha at the bodhimaṇḍa shows that practice takes bodhi as its essence. Her sitting on the lion seat of king-of-jewels maṇi shows that all discriminating wisdoms serve as the seat's essence; the corresponding fruition is likewise. 'Maṇi' symbolizes wisdom's freedom from defilements—the stains of self and others. 'King' shows wisdom's sovereignty. 'Lion' is explained as a dependent compound (tatpuruṣa); in all cases one must contemplate and know cause and effect. Being surrounded by countless night spirits symbolizes that practice is omnipresent. Manifesting physical forms reflecting all sentient beings means she manifests physical bodies in response, to receive ordinary beings according to their faculties. Attaining the liberation of profound, sovereign, wondrous sound shows that the wisdom of this stage is sovereign and skilled at expounding the teaching. One can see this by reflecting on the meaning of the names. The general meaning of expounding the teaching at this stage is: because sentient beings might not understand its practice, this holy one presents both teaching and practice together to make it easy to comprehend, so that their practice will not be erroneous. In the sixth of the ten abodes, which broadly clarifies the worldly wisdom within the supramundane, a monk was used to symbolize it, because the ten abodes initially seek the mind of leaving the world. Here in the ten grounds, which clarify the nurturing of kindness and compassion, the sixth ground and other grounds are symbolized by goddesses. Follow this model as one advances through the stages to understand its intent.
