Second, explaining the gate of practice of this ground: This ground practices the vow pāramitā. Because wisdom increases in this ground, with the essence of wisdom inherently pure, initiating practice through vows becomes even more spontaneous and unhindered. If one does not arouse wisdom through vows, there is the danger of resembling the two vehicles; vows are used to guard against this so that one does not stagnate in purity. Upon reaching this ground, the Dharma dictates that one receives the threefold empowerment and seven exhortations of all buddhas, causing one to be mindful of fundamental vows and generate the functioning of wisdom, spontaneously giving rise to vast compassion and thereby fulfilling the spontaneous, effortless functioning of wisdom and compassion. The preceding seventh ground achieved having practice and having unfolding within entry into the world; this ground achieves non-practice and non-unfolding within having practice and having unfolding, fulfilling great compassion by following the functioning of wisdom. Yet, because they are not yet fully unhindered with respect to the subsequent Good Wisdom Ground, and because spontaneous wisdom increases in brilliance without waiting for conscious effort, [this is established as such].
