Under the first [heading], directly entering the Dharma gate of this stage, from the beginning "At that time the youth Sudhana" down to "I have attained the unsurpassed banner liberation gate," this section of text is divided roughly into thirteen points: first, recollecting instructions and contemplating superior advancement; second, wandering by stages until reaching the country of Narāsoka; third, inquiring everywhere for Bhīmottarasoṣa; fourth, seeing a great forest adorned with asaṃkhyeyas of trees; fifth, seeing that rishi seated on grass beneath a sandalwood tree, leading ten thousand disciples; sixth, stating what he seeks; seventh, the rishi praising Sudhana; eighth, the rishi revealing to Sudhana the name of his Dharma gate; ninth, Sudhana asking about the realm of the unsurpassed banner liberation; tenth, the rishi rubbing Sudhana's crown with his hand and grasping his hand, causing Sudhana to see his own body go to worlds as numerous as the dust motes of Buddha-kṣetras in the ten directions; eleventh, Sudhana seeing the Buddhas and gaining benefit; twelfth, the rishi releasing Sudhana's hand, so that he was back in his original place; and thirteenth, from "I only know this unsurpassed banner liberation" onwards, deferring to the virtues [of others] and advancing onward. The pāṭali tree resembles the catalpa tree of this land, its scent fragrant and its flowers purple. The nyagrodha tree has leaves resembling the persimmon leaves of this land, its fruits resemble loquats, and beneath the fruit sits a calyx like that of a persimmon; this species resists decay, and among all trees it is the tallest and largest. Leading ten thousand disciples illustrates the completeness of his practice.
