Second, within the gate of attributing virtues and advancing, from "Like all bodhisattva-mahāsattvas" down to "bid farewell and departed" there are ten lines of sūtra text, which approximately establish five gates: first, attributing virtues and advancing; second, pointing out the location of the spiritual friend, saying that it is in the bodhimaṇḍa in the country of Magadha in Jambudvīpa; third, adducing the earth spirit spiritual friend named Sthāvarā (Anzhu); fourth, exhorting him to go there and inquire; fifth, paying homage and bidding farewell. In explaining the meaning according to the text: Question: Why does it not mention the south, but says that in the bodhimaṇḍa in the country of Magadha in Jambudvīpa there is an earth spirit named Sthāvarā? Answer: This is identical to the tenth abode of consecration among the ten abodes, returning that liberation into saṃsāra so that, following wisdom, great compassion benefits sentient beings, all in complete perfection. Mentioning only Jambudvīpa without seeking any particular direction is because this is the dedication of equality with the dharmadhātu. Furthermore, the earth spirit who presides over the bodhimaṇḍa has the meaning of totally gathering together, and the ten grounds follow this pattern. "The country of Magadha" has already been explained previously. "The earth spirit who presides over the bodhimaṇḍa": because previously it was explained that the celestial spirit presides over the perfection of wisdom, here it is said that the earth spirit presides over the perfection of compassion, symbolizing that the earth can bear all things and nourish sentient beings. To symbolize that compassion stays below to generate all Dharma gates, nurturing and bearing sentient beings so as to cause them all to leave the suffering of birth and death, it is symbolized by the earth spirit. It also indicates that the earth spirit is what the bodhisattva of this stage presides over, which is why it is called an earth spirit, showing that great compassion thickly sustains all things. "In the bodhimaṇḍa": because in this stage the five dharmas of bodhi's principle, wisdom, and compassion are unified into one, all being completely fulfilled. Being named the spirit Sthāvarā ("Secure Abiding"): because one is equally complete in these five dharmas, with nothing that wavers.
