"Buddha" means awakened. Awakening has two meanings: first, initial awakening; second, inherent awakening. This Buddha is an awakening without beginning or end, with the obstacles of the three times exhausted; hence he is named "Buddha." He is not like [the Buddha in] the provisional teachings who has an appearance in the world and nirvāṇa, and has a beginning and an end. Furthermore, for "Buddha" there are four meanings in the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*: first, having virtue, for *bhaga* means virtue, and *va* means having; second, skilled discrimination, for *bhaga* means discrimination, and *va* means skilled; third, having fame, for *bhaga* means fame, and *va* means having; fourth, able to destroy lust, anger, and delusion, for *bhaga* means destruction, and *va* means lust, anger, and delusion. Furthermore, the *Buddhabhūmi-śāstra* says there are six meanings, with the verse stating: "Sovereign, blazing, and dignified, / Renowned, auspicious, and noble; / Possessing these six distinctions of meaning, / Therefore he is collectively titled Bhagavat."
