Sixth, the difference in the purity or defilement of the dwelling in the reward land: In the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the Buddha's reward land is indicated to be in the west; beyond Buddha-lands as numerous as thirty-two sands of the Ganges, there is Śākyamuni's reward land. Because the defilement and purity of provisional learners of the three vehicles had not yet been eliminated, they saw this Sahā world as defiled, evil, and impure; the Tathāgata thereupon provisionally indicated that the reward land was in the west. In the Dharma door of the ultimate teaching of the Avataṃsaka, this Sahā world itself is pure and undefiled, and the worlds of the ten directions are pure and flawless; because the defilement and purity of the bodhisattvas of the ultimate teaching have been exhausted, the realm is purely clean. For bodhisattvas of the provisional teaching, where there is no defilement or purity, they spontaneously produce defilement; hence he pointed to the reward land as being in the west.
