Ninth, this sūtra is like the great ocean: its essence has no active functioning, yet due to causes and conditions it produces four great precious jewels, and from these four jewels it can produce all gems and treasures. If there were not these four jewels, all the other treasures could not be produced. The names of the four jewels have already been explained above. This sūtra is also like this: the ocean of the Tathāgata's single pure nature is shared by all sentient beings, yet they cannot expound it. However, the Tathāgata, in accord with various conditions, gives rise to the four great wisdoms and the four immeasurable minds, and is able to bring forth all Dharma gates and immeasurable treasures of the path, benefiting and pacifying sentient beings without any lack. With respect to this ocean of nature, if there were not the four wisdoms and the four immeasurable minds, even if there were holy fruits, they would all accord with the practice of the two vehicles of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. Although the Dharma treasures of the four wisdoms and the four immeasurables are perfected within this ocean of nature, that ocean of nature has no maker, because dharmas are just so in being devoid of attainment and devoid of realization.
