First, the difference in the place where the Dharma was taught: The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra was taught between the twin śāla trees by the bank of the Hiraṇyavatī River in the kingdom of Kuśinagara, whereas the Avataṃsaka Sūtra was taught under the jeweled bodhi tree in the bodhimaṇḍa in the kingdom of Magadha; therefore it is said that there is a difference in the place where the Dharma was taught.
