The fifth section has four and a half lines of the sūtra, divided into two parts. First, from 'Sons of the Buddha, herein, fundamental ignorance conditions karmic formations' down to 'due to mutual assistance,' there are two lines of the sūtra, which explain that the eleven limbs of existence, such as fundamental ignorance, all generally stem from delusion regarding fundamental wisdom, where the false mind forms consciousness and they mutually assist one another. Within each single condition there are twelve, and because their reciprocal essences mutually assist each other, there are one hundred forty-four. In each of the three times there are one hundred forty-four, making four hundred thirty-two in all. All of them generally stem from delusion regarding the fundamental true wisdom, which is called fundamental ignorance. Within fundamental ignorance, due to the three factors of sense-objects, six sense organs, and consciousness, the five aggregates are generated. With the five aggregates confronting the six sense organs, all contacts conditionally arise, taking mental consciousness as their primary master throughout. Following sense organs, sense-objects, and consciousness, they can produce various karmic conditions of birth and death, up to the eighty-four thousand defilements, all arising from this. The names and numbers of the eighty-four thousand afflictions are explained in full in the 'Chapter on the Merits of the Minor Marks and Radiance.' One need only understand for oneself that the three factors of consciousness, mind, and sense organs/objects are of one single nature; 'one single nature' refers to naturelessness. Penetrating the principle of naturelessness, one universally seals all sense-objects with universal light wisdom, so that wondrous function is ever tranquil and fundamental ignorance becomes wisdom; all of this is called the ocean of all-knowledge. Second, the two and a half lines of the sūtra from 'the cessation of fundamental ignorance' onward explain that penetrating fundamental ignorance becomes the condition for liberation, as is fully detailed in the text itself.
