First, regarding the indication of the direction in which the kalyāṇamitra dwells: why is he made to go to the south? It is to illuminate that relying on a directional quarter represents the Dharma. The south is correctness, is the Li trigram, is radiance, because the center of Li is empty. Because its center is empty, Li is radiance, the sun, and the nine heavens; in the body it is the head, the eyes, and the mind. When the mind penetrates emptiness and nonexistence, the sun of wisdom is naturally bright; hence this image is taken to represent the Way. Therefore the sūtra says: 'the direction-ruling deity who brightly refines all rituals of the ten directions'. A 'direction' is the Dharma; it merely takes the principle that the Great Image has no fixed direction, just as the sun moves in the sky and radiance adheres to the earth, or as wisdom moves in emptiness and radiance adheres to the myriad things: there is nothing not known, nothing not illuminated. Grasping this single Dharma, the ten directions are interfused.
