In the second [section], praising virtues and advancing upward, from "As all bodhisattva-mahāsattvas..." downward to "took his leave and departed" comprises eight and a half lines of sūtra text. In terms of meaning, this is divided into roughly four gates: first, praising virtues and advancing upward; second, showing the kalyāṇamitra's location and the city where he dwells; third, bringing forward the city's name as Great Flourishing and the good friend's name as the householder Vidvān (Clear Wisdom); fourth, Sudhana bowing in homage, taking leave, and departing. From "As all bodhisattvas..." downward is called praising virtues and advancing upward. The city being named Great Flourishing is established in reference to the master of the teaching. Because the vigor pāramitā greatly flourishes in benefiting [others], the city's name is established. The householder being named Vidvān (Clear Wisdom) refers to the fourth practice, the practice of non-flinching: perceiving capacities and benefiting beings, he looks up into empty space and immediately bestows both material wealth and the Dharma; therefore he is named Clear Wisdom. This corresponds to the abode of noble birth among the ten abodes. In the fourth ground among the ten grounds, supramundane wisdom is attained and becomes manifest, and karma of the three realms is exhausted, so that one is to be born into the house of the Buddha. In these ten practices, being the householder Vidvān signifies that while residing in the mundane world, he cherishes the Way and benefits living beings, and is therefore called a householder.
