Eighth, clarifying the realms of gathering and transforming. Indeed, the Buddha's realm is boundless; according with capacities, it varies, and in accordance with the breadth and narrowness of sentiment, the perceptions differ; it is not that the Tathāgata divides its measurement or number. When sentiment is petty, the realm is narrow; when capacity is broad, the realm is vast. If wisdom tallies with the true source, the Buddha's realm completely encompasses the dharmadhātu. Some see Jambudvīpa as the realm of transformation, or see the four continents as the sphere for saving sentient beings; some see his form filling the trichiliocosm, or see the saṃbhogakāya's ten oceans—such are the various forms. The capacities of beings are myriad, and the established teachings are disparate in a thousand ways and ten thousand variations; on what can a novice student rely? I shall briefly present five gates to distinguish the provisional and the ultimate, enabling them to abandon the branches and cleave to the root, to return from the periphery back to the source, and swiftly realize bodhi without delay or hindrance. 1. The Buddha's realm as seen among humans; 2. The Buddha's realm as seen by the devas; 3. The realm of the Buddha's gathering and transforming as seen by arhats among the two vehicles; 4. The Buddha's realm as seen by bodhisattvas of the provisional teaching; 5. The Buddha's realm as seen by bodhisattvas of the ultimate teaching.
