○ (Fascicle 62) Having admonished them, Mañjuśrī travelled south to the east of Dhanyākara city, where he dwelt in the Sāla Grove of the Adorned Banner and expounded the sūtra Universally Illuminating the Dharmadhātu. At that time, countless hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nāgas were reborn among humans and devas, ten thousand nāgas attained non-retrogression in anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi, and countless sentient beings were each tamed within the three vehicles. After five hundred each of upāsakas, upāsikās, boys, and girls from Dhanyākara city had assembled, among the five hundred boys Sudhana was the foremost. Mañjuśrī thereupon observed the causes and conditions for Sudhana's receiving his name, and so on; having known these causes and conditions, he also knew that the boy had already made offerings to buddhas, deeply planted roots of goodness, and had become a vessel for the Buddha-Dharma. Having observed this, Mañjuśrī expounded the Dharma for him, expounding the dharma of the accumulation of all buddhas, the dharma of continuous succession, the dharma of the purity of the assemblies, the dharma of the wheel of Dharma, the dharma of the dharmakāya, and so on (as in the opening phrase), causing him to generate the mind [of bodhi]. Having heard this, he diligently sought anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi, spoke verses in praise, reproached himself, and so forth. Mañjuśrī certified and praised him, causing him to draw near to good friends (kalyāṇamitras). Drawing near to good friends while aspiring to the practice of bodhi is the initial cause and condition for being endowed with all-knowledge. Sudhana asked: 'How should one learn the bodhisattva practice, cultivate the bodhisattva practice, proceed in practice, purely enter, accomplish, accord with, be mindful of, and increase and expand it, so as to quickly bring the practices of Samantabhadra to completion?' Mañjuśrī further urged him to draw near to kalyāṇamitras: 'Travelling south from here, there is the country of Rāmāvarānta; on Mount Sugrīva there is the monk Meghashrī,' and so forth. The monk Meghashrī said to Sudhana: 'I have attained the power of sovereign, decisive understanding; my eye of faith is pure, the light of wisdom shines, I universally contemplate the realm free from all hindrances, skillfully observing with the all-seeing eye clear and penetrating, equipped with pure practice, going to the lands of the ten directions to make offerings to all buddhas, upholding the dharmas of all buddhas, and so forth. Good man! I have only attained this dharma-gate of the universal vision of the light of wisdom that is mindful of the realm of all buddhas; how could I fully fathom the pure practice-gates of boundless wisdom of the great bodhisattvas?' He extensively clarified the dharma-gate of mindfulness of the Buddha, seeing all kṣetras and all buddhas within a single thought-moment. Next, he directed him to travel south to the country of Sāgaramukha to the monk Sāgaramegha. Sudhana, single-mindedly mindful of the teaching and dharma-gate of the kalyāṇamitra, arrived at Sāgaramegha's place, and upon seeing him (and so forth), asked: 'How does one abandon the stage of ordinary beings and enter the stage of the Tathāgata?' and so forth. Sāgaramegha said: 'I have dwelt here for twelve years, constantly taking the great ocean as my realm of contemplation. I contemplated the great ocean as vast, immeasurable, profound, and difficult to fathom, gradually deepening and expanding. While contemplating in this way, a lotus flower appeared in the great ocean, a buddha appeared within the flower, and expounded the Samantacakṣus (Universal Eye) Dharma-gate for me. I only know this Samantacakṣus Dharma-gate.' The monk Supratiṣṭhita dwelt in a coastal settlement beside the road to Laṅkā; when Sudhana arrived, he saw this monk coming and going in the air, who said to Sudhana: 'I have accomplished the unhindered vimokṣa-gate; seeing the mental activities and so forth of all sentient beings is entirely without obstacle, and making offerings to all buddhas is entirely sovereign.'
