Sixth, the section on the manifest and the unmanifest. One view takes the manifest wholesome alone as the essence; a second takes the unmanifest wholesome alone as the essence; a third combines the manifest and unmanifest wholesome as the essence. However, these three precepts all have both the manifest and the unmanifest: the manifest is the vowing mind, and the unmanifest is the precept arising from the mind that extends far to bodhi. The Hīnayāna precisely takes the unmanifest as the essence, for the manifest mind is difficult to sustain constantly. The great being adopts both; if śīla is combined with prajñā, then the precept of the mind is taken as the root. If the mind is constantly present, the unmanifest constantly arises.
