On the passage in the sūtra from "they have attained the ultimate bodhisattva" to "the gates of all samādhis": The commentary states: This third part is the culmination and fulfillment of their understanding and practice. That is, the six perfections are the practice, and the samādhis are the understanding. Some say that seeing phenomena arise and thus knowing they do not perish, and seeing phenomena perish and thus knowing they do not arise, is what is meant by "neither arising nor perishing." This is incorrect. Once one sees phenomena arise, one must know they perish. That which arises returns to perishing; this is an unequivocal determination. Here it means that self and phenomena are empty; because they are empty, they are signless; because they are signless, they are wishless; and on this basis, one does not see arising or perishing.
