The sūtra says: "The noble, distinguished, powerful, and wealthy" down to "abiding together with pain." The commentary states: This second part individually reveals the fault of greed. There are two parts: this first relies on wealth and nobility to express the fault of greed. Some say: "Cold" refers to the eight cold hells, and "heat" refers to the eight hot hells. Experiencing sufferings such as cold and heat constantly, they therefore "abide together with pain." "Pain" (tong) means sensation (vedanā). This is probably incorrect, because the present body and subsequent suffering cannot be said to occur "together." In the present interpretation, cold fear and feverish distress abide together with pain. Or there are sūtra editions that read "cold and fever at the time of death," which is probably an error.
