The sūtra says: “Today the Honoured of Heaven practices the Tathāgata's virtue.” The commentary states: This is the fifth recollection. The Honoured of Heaven is the deva of the primary meaning, which explains the sense of the Buddha-nature being not empty. That is, the unshared Buddha-dharmas belonging solely to the Buddha are called the Tathāgata's virtue, which no other noble ones possess; hence the Tathāgata's virtue is used to explain the name Honoured of Heaven. Although Master Yuan gave a separate explanation of name and virtue, here virtue explains the name because, looking at this sūtra text, it accords with the principle of indicating and then explaining. The names are “the World-Honoured One,” “the Hero of the World,” and so forth. The virtues are the exceptional, what is abided in, and so forth.
