On the sūtra's words from "A Brahmā voice like rolling thunder" to "I now explain; listen attentively, noble one," the Commentary states: This fourth [part] is the Tathāgata responding to the request. It has two parts: this first briefly indicates the granting of the request. "Brahmā voice" is a general designation; the eight tones are a specific praise. As stated in the Brahmāyu-sūtra: first, the best voice, because the sound is sorrowfully sublime; second, the easily understood voice, because the words are clearly enunciated; third, the harmonised voice, because the volume is balanced; fourth, the gentle and soft voice, because the sound is light and supple; fifth, the unerring voice, because the words have no mistakes; sixth, the non-feminine voice, because the sound is heroic and clear; seventh, the dignified and wise voice, because the words command awe and gravity; eighth, the profound and far-reaching voice, because the sound travels far. Responding to Avalokiteśvara with these wondrous voices, it therefore says "gives forth a wondrous utterance."
