3.40

On the sūtra's words from "Having previously seen the World-Honoured One" to "Joyfully listening to such teaching," the Commentary states: Hereafter, through having evil and not faithfully hearing it, it praises the depth and gravity of the sūtra. Praising its subtlety and wondrousness is to cause people to abandon evil and cultivate good. Praising its depth and gravity is to cause them to dispel flippant slander and generate joyful faith.
