Third, from "in Rājagṛha" onwards directly clarifies the places where the Tathāgata traveled to transform. There are two: 1. Traveling in the royal city and villages to transform the lay assembly. 2. Traveling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa and other places to transform the monastic assembly. Furthermore, as for laypeople, greedy pursuit of the five desires continues constantly. Even if they generate a pure mind, it is like drawing on water. Yet because he accords with conditions to universally benefit, he does not abandon great compassion. The monastic and the lay forms are distinct; there is no way for them to dwell together. This is called dwelling by realm. Furthermore, as for monastics, they disregard body and give up life, sever desires and return to the real. Their minds are like vajra, equal to a round mirror. Yearning for the Buddha stage, they widely benefit self and others. If they do not completely detach from noisy defilement, there is no way this virtue can be verified. This is called dwelling by reliance.
