答曰：「此有別意。云何別意？此等聲聞多是外道。如《賢愚經》說：『優樓頻蠃迦葉，領五百弟子，修事邪法。伽耶迦葉，領二百五十弟子，修事邪法。那提迦葉，領二百五十弟子，修事邪法。總有一千。皆受佛化，得羅漢道。其二百五十者，即是舍利、目連弟子，共領一處，修事邪法。亦受佛化，皆得道果。此等四眾，合為一處。故有千二百五十人也。』」

Answer: "This has a special meaning. What is the special meaning? These śrāvakas were mostly non-Buddhists. As the Damamūkanidāna Sūtra says: 'Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa led five hundred disciples practicing heterodox teachings. Gayā-Kāśyapa led two hundred and fifty disciples practicing heterodox teachings. Nadī-Kāśyapa led two hundred and fifty disciples practicing heterodox teachings. In total there were one thousand. All received the Buddha's conversion and attained the path of arhats. The other two hundred and fifty were disciples of Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, leading them together in one place, practicing heterodox teachings; they also received the Buddha's conversion and all attained the fruit of the path. These four groups were united in one place; therefore there were 1,250 people.'"
