Third, as for "generating the bodhicitta": this clarifies that when sentient beings aspire to advance toward the Great [Vehicle], they must not generate a shallow, lesser cause. Unless one broadly generates a vast mind, how could one unite with bodhi? [One should vow:] "May my body be equal to empty space, and my mind equal to the dharmadhātu, exhausting the nature of sentient beings. Through physical karma, with respect, offerings, and prostrations, welcoming and seeing off, coming and going, I will convey and deliver them until all are exhausted. Moreover, through verbal karma, praising and preaching the Dharma, may all receive my transformation, and may those who attain the Way upon my words be exhausted. Moreover, through mental karma, entering samādhi and contemplating, dividing my body throughout the dharmadhātu, responding to capacities to save them, may none fail to be exhausted. Having made this vow, may it increase with every thought like empty space, nowhere unpervaded, its flow of practice without end, penetrating to the utmost limit of the future, without bodily weariness and without mental satiety." Furthermore, "bodhi" is the name of the fruit of Buddhahood. Furthermore, "mind" is the mind of sentient beings capable of seeking it. Therefore it is said: "generating the bodhicitta".
