Seventh, the passage from "immeasurable devas" downward directly clarifies that, during the previous condition of revulsion toward suffering, Śakra, Brahmā, the world-protecting devas, and others followed the Buddha to the royal palace and listened to the Dharma from the sky. Some saw Śākyamuni's ūrṇā-ray transforming, some saw Amitābha's golden spiritual form, some heard of the distinctive differences among the nine ranks of rebirth, some heard that both meditative and non-meditative gates embrace all, some heard that good and evil actions converge together, some heard that the Western Pure Land before their eyes is not far away, and some heard that a single lifetime of dedicated, resolute determination parts forever from the stream of birth and death. Having heard the Tathāgata extensively expound these extraordinary benefits, these devas each gave rise to the unsurpassed mind. This is because the Buddha is the ultimate among sages: his words become sūtras; when ordinary and deluded beings partake of them, they are enabled to obtain benefit upon hearing.
