I humbly consider that the true teaching is difficult to encounter, and the essential [path] of the Pure Land is hard to meet. Desiring to cause [beings of] the five destinies to be reborn together, [the sūtra] was thus exhorted to be heard by later generations. Yet the Tathāgata's spiritual powers transform without fixed measure, concealing and revealing according to capacities, secretly transforming [beings] in the royal palace. Thereupon the holy assembly of Gṛdhrakūṭa of lesser wisdom harboured doubts; when the Buddha later returned to the mountain, they had not observed the detailed circumstances. At that time Ānanda proclaimed for them the transformation in the royal palace, the two gates of meditative and non-meditative [good]; because of this, the various assemblies heard it together, and none failed to accept, practice, and revere it.
