Fifth, reconciling the intent regarding a different time. There are two aspects to this. First, a treatise says: 'Like a person who is mindful of Prabhūtaratna Buddha and thus attains non-retrogression toward unexcelled bodhi'—in general, the term 'bodhi' is the name for the Buddha-fruit, and it is also the principle of primary retribution by which one becomes a buddha. It requires that the myriad practices be fully completed before it is achieved. How could one hope to achieve it merely through the single practice of mindfulness of the Buddha? That is impossible. Although it is said not to be immediately realized, among the myriad practices it is one practice. How is this known? As the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says, 'The bhikṣu Guṇamegha told Sudhana: "In the ocean of samādhis of the Buddha-Dharma, I know only one practice, namely the samādhi of mindfulness of the Buddha."' Relying on this textual proof, how is it not a single practice? Though it is a single practice, amidst saṃsāra up until Buddhahood one never falls back, hence it is called 'not falling.'
