"‘Its maṇi-water flows and pours among the flowers, ascending and descending along the stalks; its sound is subtle and wondrous, expounding suffering, emptiness, impermanence, non-self, and the various pāramitās, and furthermore praising the marks and signs of all Buddhas.’" Because it issues from wish-fulfilling gems, it is called maṇi-water, using both Chinese and Sanskrit. "Ascending and descending along the stalks": xun means to follow; "tree" means stalk. It means the water follows the flower stalks upward into the blossoms, whirling and producing sounds, and then descends from the stalks. The exposition is threefold: first, the four applications of mindfulness; second, the six perfections; third, praising the marks and signs of the Buddhas. Third, the pond light, in two parts: first, light surging from the jewels; second, light transforming into miraculous birds. First, light surging from the jewels.
