"At that time, after the Great King had eaten the flour and drunk the juice, he asked for water to rinse his mouth. Having finished, he pressed his palms together reverently, bowed from afar toward Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa to the World-Honoured One, and said: 'Mahāmaudgalyāyana is my close friend; would that he arouse compassion and confer upon me the eight precepts.'" "Maudgalyāyana" is translated here as "Bean-Gatherer Clan." In ancient times, an immortal gathered beans to eat, and named his clan after this. Being the teacher of the king's household, he is therefore called a "close friend." Second, Maudgalyāyana responds to the capacity.
