"At that time, the World-Honoured One then smiled, and a five-coloured light issued forth from the Buddha's mouth, each ray shining upon the crown of Bimbisāra's head. At that time, although the great king was locked in confinement, his mind's eye was without obstruction, and from afar he saw the World-Honoured One. He bowed his head and face in homage, and naturally progressed to become an anāgāmin." Earlier, when the Tathāgata manifested the lands, his primary intention lay right here. Spiritual capacity and sympathetic resonance met; secretly communicating and subtly responding, the Buddha therefore smiled. The Guanfo xianghai jing says: "It is the constant rule of all Buddhas that whenever they smile, a five-coloured light invariably issues forth from their mouths." The light shone upon the king's crown; the Buddha's power was bestowed to cause him to advance to the fruit of the path. Receiving the light and seeing the Buddha, he deeply awakened to impermanence, generated wisdom, severed defilements, and thereupon attained the third fruit. Anāgāmin is translated here as "non-returner". With fetters and delusions nearing exhaustion, he does not return to the lower realm. According to this, when Bimbisāra saw the Buddha and attained the fruit, he should have heard the method of contemplation together with the queen. Since only Vaidehī and her five hundred court ladies are mentioned later when summarizing the benefits, we know that Bimbisāra entered extinction right after attaining the fruit. Second, properly clarifying the contemplation method as the correct cause of pure karma, has two parts: first, the Tathāgata's assent; second, directly showing what was spoken. First, the Tathāgata's assent.
