"‘Such foolish people steal the property of the saṅgha and steal the property of the present saṅgha.’" The property of the saṅgha is the most grave, hence it is specifically singled out. "Saṅghika" is translated here as "the great assembly," referring to the permanent property, of which there are two kinds: first, the permanently permanent, which refers to monastery buildings, rice, grain, and so forth; second, the permanent of the ten directions, which refers to food, drink, and supplies offered to the monks. The property of the present saṅgha is also of two kinds: first, the presently present, meaning that which is immediately distributed according to headcount; second, the present of the ten directions, meaning that which is broadly given based on general appearances. Stealing any of the four kinds of saṅgha property constitutes an offense. A sūtra says: "Even for the five heinous sins and the four grave offenses, I can still save [them]. But for those who steal the property of the saṅgha, I cannot save them." This is an extreme admonition. Third, the fault regarding teaching the Dharma.
