" 'Therefore, you should single-mindedly fix your mindfulness and closely contemplate that Buddha: Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyak-saṃbuddha.'" It is simply because the merit of contemplating the Buddha is lofty and deep that he urges them to fix their contemplation. Previously he spoke generally of all Buddhas; here he specifically points to Amitāyus, concluding and returning to the primary intent of this present sūtra; thus it says, "closely contemplate that Buddha." Tathāgata (duotuoejiadu) is translated here as "Thus Come" (Rulai). Arhat (aluohe) is translated here as "Worthy of Offerings" (Yinggong). Samyak-saṃbuddha (sanmiaosanfotuo) is translated here as "Right and Universal Knowledge" (Zhengpianzhi). These are three epithets briefly cited from among the ten epithets; their detailed explanation is as elsewhere. Second, directly explaining the method of contemplating the Buddha has three parts: first, individually explaining the three images; second, generally explaining the three images; third, revealing the benefits. First, individually explaining the three images has two parts: first, the image of Amitāyus; second, the images of the two bodhisattvas. First, the image of Amitāyus has three parts: first, seeing the bodily appearance of the image; second, seeing the adornments of the land; third, admonishing them to contemplate closely. First, seeing the bodily appearance of the image.
