"The five hundred female attendants gave rise to the aspiration for anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi and vowed to be born in that land. The World-Honoured One gave predictions to all of them that they would all attain rebirth, and having been born in that land, they would attain the samādhi of the present Buddhas standing before them." Question: The Treatise on Rebirth states that women and those with defective faculties cannot be reborn there; how does this not contradict it? Answer: It does not mean that women and those with defective faculties of this land cannot be reborn there; it means that those born in that land will not receive the retribution of being a woman or having defective faculties. For Amitāyus made the vow: "If there are women who, having been born in my land, still take on a female form, may I not attain supreme enlightenment." It also says: "If the humans and devas in my land are not endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great person, may I not attain supreme enlightenment." Thus we know that in that land there are neither women nor those with defective faculties. The rest is as explained in the Shiyi lun. Third, the devas arouse their minds.
