Answer: "According to the *Śūraṅgama-sūtra*, in the southern direction inconceivable asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, he became a Buddha in a world named Samatā, with the Buddha name Tathāgata Longzhong Shangzun Wang ('Dragon-Seed Supreme Sovereign King'), who was precisely Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. The *Aṅgulimālīya-sūtra* states: Now in the northern direction there is a land named Nityapramudita, where the Buddha is named Tathāgata Huanxizang Mani Baoji ('Joyful Storehouse Mani Jewel-Accumulation'), who is Mañjuśrī. Furthermore, the *Bodhisattvagarbha-sūtra* states: Mañjuśrī said: 'Originally I was the teacher of Śākyamuni, and now I am his disciple; two honored ones do not teach side by side, so I act as a bodhisattva.' Fascicle four of the *Yingluo jing* states: Long ago in the past there was a Buddha named Great Body, who was Mañjuśrī. Furthermore, the *Sūtra on the Buddha-Land of Mañjuśrī* states: Later, he will become a Buddha in the southern direction named Universal Manifestation, in a world named Vimalacitta, surpassing the land of Amitābha. Furthermore, the *Mañjuśrīparinirvāṇa-sūtra* states: The Buddha told him: 'Four hundred and fifty years after my nirvāṇa, Mañjuśrī will emerge from the Snow Mountains and proceed to his birthplace, the village of Tāla in the country of Śrāvastī, displaying his wondrous body with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor signs, emitting great light; suddenly the light will vanish and he will then enter parinirvāṇa, leaving a whole-body relic sixteen feet tall, like pure lapis lazuli clear and bright inside and out, with a pure gold image within his heart sitting in full lotus posture upon a lotus flower, six feet high. On the left arm of this full body of Mañjuśrī there will be ten Buddha seals, with the names of ten Buddhas in each seal; on the right arm there will be seven Buddha seals, with the names of seven Buddhas in each seal. If someone is mindful of Mañjuśrī, they should first mentally visualize the lapis lazuli image and the seated image within the heart; furthermore, being mindful of his name once eradicates the sins of birth-and-death for one billion two hundred million kalpas; if one is wholehearted, within seven days he is certain to manifest, and what is wished will be granted. There are eight spirits at Mount Gandhamādana who will move and place it atop the summit of Mount Gandhamādana to make offerings.'"
