Answer: "That treatise speaks on the basis of the Buddha's enjoyment reward land, because the enjoyment land of the Buddhas has only the great bodhisattvas of the ten bhūmis and has no ordinary beings or people of the two vehicles. Now, in this sūtra, it is spoken with respect to the transformation land, because bodhisattvas prior to the bhūmis, as well as ordinary beings and people of the two vehicles, see it and enjoy it together. The *Contemplation Sūtra* says that those of small-vehicle nature also attain rebirth. 'The bodhisattvas' also cites the assembly of bodhisattvas who are constant attendants. Regarding 'śrāvakas', the *Ratnakūṭa Sūtra* says there are four kinds: first, manifested transformations; second, those of excessive pride; third, those of fixed nature; fourth, those who generate the bodhicitta. 'Manifested transformations' means they are actually Buddhas and great bodhisattvas who manifest as śrāvakas to deliver sentient beings, in order to guide and receive actual śrāvakas, such as Pūrṇa, Rāhula, and others. 'Those of excessive pride' means claiming to have attained what has not been attained and claiming to have realized what has not been realized; this is called excessive pride. 'Those of fixed nature' means those who originally have little compassion, being solely for themselves and not for sentient beings, fearing the world and abiding only in nirvāṇa; this is called being of definitive nature within the small vehicle. 'Those who generate the bodhicitta' means those who originally had little compassion, but drew near to the Buddha and developed faith; although they abide in nirvāṇa, the Buddhas admonish and transform them, skillfully enticing them, so that they eventually generate the bodhicitta, though they are dull and slow."
