The sūtra states: “The sentient beings who are born in the land of Sukhāvatī are all avaivartika.” Next, this explains the second [group], the assembly of newly attained worthies. Therefore the *Sūtra of Immeasurable Life* says: “If all sentient beings clearly believe in the Buddha’s wisdom, perform various meritorious deeds, and with faithful minds dedicate [their merits] and make the aspiration wishing to be born in my land, they will naturally be born by transformation inside seven-jewel lotus blossoms; within a moment, their bodily marks, radiant light, wisdom, and meritorious deeds will be like those of the bodhisattvas, and all will possess the thirty-two marks with bodies of true golden color. If it be not so, may I not attain unexcelled awakening.” Thus the *Qingjingjue jing* says: “Those who are born over there are all complete with the various marks, their wisdom is fully perfected, their supernormal powers are unobstructed, or they attain the gate of the hundred dharma illuminations and enter the Bhūmi of Joy.” From this we know that among those born there, some reach the stages of the three worthies prior to the bhūmis; hence they are called 'newly attained worthies.' Regarding 'avaivartika': *a* means 'non-,' and *vaivartika* means 'receding.' Therefore the *Larger Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* says: “Because they do not recede, they are called avaivartika.”
