The sūtra says: “When that person approaches the end of life, Amitābha Buddha and the assembly of holy beings appear before them”—next, this explains the third [point], the holy assembly extending a welcome. According to the *Contemplation Sūtra* and others, some see that Buddha and the bodhisattvas holding a purple-gold dais or a golden lotus flower, like Chan Master Zhen of the Liang dynasty who saw a white-silver dais; or some see transformed Buddhas and bodhisattvas come to welcome them, the superior or inferior manifestations of the welcoming merely according with the shallowness or depth of their practice.
