The sūtra says: 'If there are good men and good women who hear this sūtra and uphold it, or who hear the names of these buddhas, all these good men and good women will be protected and remembered by all the buddhas together, and they will all attain non-retrogression (avaivartika) from anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi.' Next, this is the second part of the commentary, the explanation. 'If there are good men...' refers to the persons being protected. Those who hear this Amitābha and hear the buddhas of the aforementioned six directions, [numerous as] the sands of the Ganges, are the protectors. 'All these good men and good women will be protected and remembered by all the buddhas' refers to their properly receiving this mindful protection. As Vasubandhu's Prajñā[-pāramitopadeśa-]śāstra says: to state that bodhisattvas whose faculties are mature are protected and remembered by the buddhas means that external conditions of arrogance are guarded against; that is, external evils do not reach them, their inner minds have no distressing thoughts, and their inner virtues are recorded. This is because their wisdom develops on its own and is augmented by the external power of the buddhas to benefit beings. Furthermore, the sūtra is the basis for initiating practice, which is cultivated to nourish the interior; while the buddhas are conditions that guard practice, reverently invoked to serve as external protection. Therefore, it says that by upholding this sūtra and hearing the names of these buddhas, one is protected and remembered; and by receiving this mindful protection, all good men and women who hear this sūtra will not regress from the mind of the supreme path. The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā says: If a person can recite Amitābha Buddha's name and single-mindedly remember him, they will likewise attain non-retrogression.
