Answer: 'The Maitreyaparipṛcchā-śāstra states: When bodhisattvas see the Dharma, they forever abandon the hindrances to bodhi, namely all afflictions such as the view of an enduring self; transcending the stages of the two vehicles and realizing the profound mind, they are called "non-retreating" (bu tui); because they realize the superior Dharma and accomplish practices such as giving, they are called "non-turning back" (bu zhuan)—that is, they gain mastery over birth.' Anuttarā is translated here as "unsurpassed"; samyak means "right and universal"; saṃbodhi means "knowledge and awakening"; together they mean unsurpassed right universal knowledge and awakening. Furthermore, "unsurpassed" refers to the bodhi of the dharmakāya; "right" refers to cognition of reality as it is; "universal" refers to cognition of phenomena in their full extent. Moreover, "right" refers to the non-conceptual fundamental cognition; "awakening" refers to the non-conceptual subsequently attained cognition. This means that, due to the mindful protection of all the buddhas, one's aspiration seeking the unsurpassed fruit and cognition consequently attains non-retrogression.
